Memorial Day

May 25, 2025, By PBSWest.org

On this Memorial Day, we pause as a Region and as a Nation to honor the men and women who gave their lives in service to the United States. Their sacrifice is not an abstract idea; it is a lived reality for families, communities, and fellow service members who carry the weight of their absence every day. As we reflect, we do so with humility, gratitude, and a renewed sense of responsibility.

Across the Western Region, the military installations that anchor our communities to the veterans who sit in our chapter meetings, service is woven into our identity. We are home to active duty members, reservists, Guardsmen, veterans, and military families whose daily lives remind us that freedom is not self sustaining. It is safeguarded by those who were willing to stand in the gap, often far from home, and ultimately at the cost of their own lives.

Today, we honor them through remembrance. But remembrance is more than ceremony. It is a commitment to leadership and to living in a way that reflects the values they defended. It is a commitment to service and to uplifting our communities, supporting our veterans, and ensuring that no family who has lost a loved one to war ever feels forgotten. And it is a commitment to national responsibility, recognizing that each of us has a role in strengthening the nation they died protecting.

As a Region, we carry a special duty. Our chapters span across the Pacific Ocean and the Middle East and include Brothers who have worn the uniform, Brothers who have lost friends in combat, and brothers who continue to serve. Let us honor their experiences by fostering spaces of support, understanding, and unity. Let us lead with the steadiness, courage, and integrity that military service teaches. Furthermore, let us remember that the truest tribute we can offer the fallen is to live with purpose, compassion, and unwavering dedication to one another.

May this day remind us that sacrifice is sacred, service is honorable, and remembrance is our enduring obligation. May we continue to stand together as brothers, as leaders, and as grateful beneficiaries of the freedoms secured by those who gave all.

Sigma, more than a fraternity, we are the standard by which all others are measured.
