Bro. Andrew O. Valmon | Theta Tau Sigma Chapter


Andrew Orlando Valmon was born on January 1, 1965, in Brooklyn, New York, and raised in Manchester Township, New Jersey, where he attended Manchester Township High School. He attended college at Seton Hall University and graduated in 1987 with a degree in communications.

He also competed at the 1991 and 1993 World Championships, placing fifth in the 400 at the 1991 Worlds, and winning a gold medal in the relay in 1993. Valmon won the silver medal at the World Indoor Athletics Championships in 1991 in Seville. In 1992 he won a gold medal with the American 4×400 m relay team at the Olympic Games in Barcelona. The same year, Valmon set his personal best of 44.28 seconds.

Valmon later became a track coach, first at Georgetown University from 1999-2003, and later at the University of Maryland. Now in his 19th year at the University of Maryland, and coaches a summer camp at the university. His experience as an Olympic Gold Medalist, combined with 24 years of collegiate coaching and an expanding experience on the international level, have helped bring Maryland's cross country and track programs to prominence.

On the track, Valmon has spent his time producing multiple All-Americans. During his tenure, 54 student-athletes have earned All-America honors for their performances on the national stage. In addition, over 50 school records have been established. In the classroom, Maryland track and field athletes consistently rank among the top of their peers with the Men’s Track program earning the school’s award for the highest team GPA two years in a row (2018 & 2019). In addition, the Women’s Cross Country team notched this award five years in a row (2013-17).
