Bro. Anthony Buchanan

Alumni Spotlight | March 31, 2020

Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Western Region's March spotlight shines on Alumni Bro. Anthony Buchanan, a member of Sigma Zeta Sigma Chapter | Tacoma, WA.

Bro. Buchanan was initiated into Epsilon Epsilon Sigma Chapter | Seattle, WA in the Fall of 2015 and was integral in the chartering of his current chapter where he serves as 1st Vice President and Dir., of Education.

Anthony gravitated towards Phi Beta Sigma due to the positive work the fraternity was doing in the community. He yearned for the opportunity to become a part of a brotherhood where wisdom and perseverance were the force of brotherhood, scholarship, and service. where he maintains the same standard of excellence he witnessed prior to ever earning letters.

When you think of the term "Brotherhood First" you would be hard-pressed to find a brother who embodies it more; “Buck” is simply a brother's brother.

Anthony has recognized several times in his short time as a member of our wondrous band:

  • 2018 Federal Way School District Adopt-A-School Program honoree.
  • 2017 WRC for the Alumni Chapter Recipient for Education
  • 2017 WR NW Area Brotherhood Award Recipient
  • 2016 WRLC Alumni Chapter Recipient for Education

Three For The Founders...
Is there a Stigma of becoming a member of a fraternity though an Alumni chapter?
“I think there are always thoughts of ‘oh this person is just trying to relive their collegiate days, or just joining for the recognition of the letters’ and that’s not true at all. It’s about joining something bigger than yourself and carving out your own lane. Use what you are passionate about to add to your community. As a Brother in higher education, one of the ways I found my talents best utilized was working to reactivate Kappa Lambda Chapter and serve as a mentor and big brother to the collegian. Without proper guidance and support from alumni and institutional staff, collegiate fraternity members are left alone to possibly mismanage situations that they are not properly equipped to handle. My work with Kappa Lambda prepared me for my leadership roles at both the chapter and regional level.”

The Hardest thing about being a member of our wondrous band?
"The hardest part about being a Sigma usually boils down to three things: finances, commitment, and oath. First of all, Brothers are not always aware of the financial or time commitments that come with being active in our organization. Furthermore, if  Brothers spent more time reviewing the words they recited in their oath, it would stick in their minds more as they conduct themselves."

If you had the opportunity to go back in time and meet any man of Sigma other than one of our Most Honorable Founders who would it be?
"The Sigma that I want to meet is Bro. Victor J. Glover, Jr., because he is an astronaut of color and I would love to learn who or what inspired him to be in a line of work where there are little to no African-Americans in his field.”
