Annual Toys For Watts
2020 has been a challenging year for everyone and even during a crazy pandemic, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., Theta Alpha Sigma Chapter was able to endure and continue its commitment to the Jordan Downs community through our Annual Toys for Watts toy giveaway.
Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., in collaboration with the Housing Authority for the City of Los Angeles, The Los Angeles Police Department, and Jordan Downs Resident Advisory Council, were able to once again come together and support the 500+ kids in the Jordan Downs community with toys.
This year’s toy acquisition and toy giveaway were completely different than in year’s past. After fundraising via GoFundMe, the Theta Alpha Sigma Alumni Chapter purchased toys from various outlets and those toys were sanitized and sorted for distribution. Due to social distancing, the Toys for Watts volunteers comprised of Sigmas, Zetas, non-Greek affiliates, LAPD officers, and Housing Authority Staff, broke up into teams and were assigned to distribute toys door to door to each resident. This was an incredible undertaking that worked out well. Seeing the blue and white family, flood Jordan, while wearing masks and practicing social distancing, truly showed our commitment to “Service for Humanity.” The goal has always been to help all families enjoy the spirit of Christmas even during difficult times. The Jordan Downs Housing Projects is a 700-unit public housing apartment complex in Watts, CA.

"Theta Alpha Sigma Chapter did an outstanding job of putting on their Toys for Watts program despite the pandemic. Project Coordinator Bro. Chris Manigault & Chapter President Bro. Maurice Williams showed exactly what Conscious Men Actively Serving the Community can make happen. The COVID-19 protocols were extremely helpful and kept the volunteers and community safe. Thank you to all the brothers and sisters that participated especially our International Director of Social Action, Bro. Dr. Michael Baslee. These are trying times, but Our Cause Speeds on its Way" stated Regional Dir., of Social Action, Bro. Woodrow Bailey.
Every child within the complex of the Jordan Downs community received a toy this year. Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., Theta Alpha Sigma Chapter of Long Beach, California, organizes and hosts this event every year, but this event could not be done without the amazing support from the Southern California Blue and White family, the housing authority, Los Angeles Police Dept and of course special shout out all the financial supporters. Thank you to all and to all a good night.
