San Diego Sigmas Support School Supply Drive
On Friday, August 19, 2018, the Brothers of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc., Lambda Iota Sigma Chapter, in their on-going effort to support local schools and educational opportunities for students donated over $750 dollars’ worth of various school supplies to America's Finest Charter School (AFCS).
AFCS located in San Diego, CA, is a non-profit K-12 Charter School which serves approximately 500 students in grades K-12. Nearly 90% of AFCS students are African- American or Latino. Almost 97% of the student population are from economically disadvantaged households. AFCS also serves a high number of homeless and Foster youths’ students.
The Mission of America’s Finest Charter School is to help students achieve the American Dream through a rigorous K-12 academic program that prepares students for success in post-secondary education and 21st century careers.
Outside of the regular school day, America’s Finest Charter School provides a rich array of visual arts, theatre, and other supplemental and enrichment educational opportunities in their After-School Programs. The donated supplies will go a long way in supporting the amazing work that Jan Perry and staff are doing at AFCS.
The effort, championed by Social Action and Education Chair, Brother Delano Jones, is reflective of the commitment of the Brothers of Lambda Iota Sigma chapter to the San Diego Community. Chapter President, Brother Richard Eberheart, reported "loving the energy" as Brothers offered personal funds to support this project. The school supply drive supports Lambda Iota Sigma’s aim and goal to foster a relationship with AFCS in the future and to continue to offer our support in areas of career exploration, volunteering on campus, and mentor their student population.
