Statement on Immigration Crisis
Yesterday the President of the United States signed an Executive Order allowing the children of undocumented immigrants to be detained with their families while waiting to be processed through the legal system for entering the United States illegally. The reversal of the President’s position came from countless advocates protesting the treatment of children being ripped from their families as inhuman and morally wrong.
The leadership of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. is calling on all members to take a stand during this very important debate. While the Executive Order does nothing to address the plight of more than 2,300 children who have already been separated from their parents under the president’s “zero tolerance” policy. There is still action that can be taken by each member of the organization. Urge Congress to pass the Keep Families Together Act (S.3036) to prohibit the separation of children from their parents. Call your U.S. Capitol Switchboard at (202) 224-3121, ask to speak to your state’s Senators and Congressional Representatives and tell them that tearing apart children from their parents is immoral and un-American and must be stopped immediately.
To be a Brotherhood of Conscious Men, Actively Serving Our Communities means we have a responsibility to stand up when we believe injustice is taking place. The history of our nation is scarred with too many scenes of families being ripped apart and we can no longer stand by and watch history repeat its self.
Ways that you can get involve:
- Call the U.S. Capitol Switchboard at (202) 224-3121 and ask to be transferred to your Senator’s/Congressional Representative’s offices.
- Send and e-mail to your Senators, go to www.senate.gov; click on “Find Your Senators”. Look up your Senators by state; go to the their web sites for e-mail addresses.
- Send an e-mail to your Representative, go to www.house.gov, and click on “Find Your Representative” (on the right-hand side of the screen) and enter your zip code. This should take you to a screen that identifies who your Representative is and how to get in touch with him or her.
- Write a Letter and send by U.S. Mail
- The Honorable (name of Senator), U.S. Senate, Washington, D.C. 20510
- The Honorable (name of Representative) U.S. House of Representatives, Washington, D.C. 20515
- Fax – If you would like to send a fax, call your Senator’s or Representative’s offices (through the Capitol switchboard) and ask for their fax numbers.
As an organization that values families, we must work as hard as we can to keep families together. Now is not the time to look away, now is the time to get into Good Trouble.
