Kappa Lambda Chapter | Univ., of Washington

Step into Education | October 27, 2017

“Step into Education” is an innovative program by Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., Kappa Lambda chapter using the art of stepping as a vector to emphasize the importance of higher education in high schools in the greater Puget Sound area of Western Washington. This program, directed at underrepresented students, utilizes the uniquely diverse backgrounds of the chapter members currently in post-secondary education to give high school students confidence and support to go to college.

Bro. Yarid Mera - son of immigrant parents hoping to positively change the healthcare system to promote equity for all patients as an aspiring surgeon.

Bro. Devin Pegues - multicultural minority from a single parent household now in a prestigious electrical engineering program on a full ride, university scholarship.

Bro. Trayvon Conrad Webster - Houston native from humble beginnings who has navigated as an accomplished D1 athlete now pursuing his doctorate in education.

Bro. Joshua Dawson - student who despite not having finances to pursue college, applied and received the Gates Millennium Scholarship to pursue an MD/PhD.

The Brothers of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., hope to imprint on high school students the belief that there are a collective of successful individuals currently in college who are ready and willing to support them to pursue higher education. The program accomplishes this through personal stories, anecdotes and stepping. By highlighting the doors that education has opened through shared personal experiences from students who resemble them, the program uniquely connects with and gives students tangible tools to begin unlocking their full potential through education.

Following the event in front of over 1,500 individuals, many of the high school students were in awe of the message put on by the Men of Sigma and have been requested to return to Federal Way for a youth education-empowerment event in January.
