Jordan Dacres, Epsilon Epsilon Sigma Chapter
Originally, the "disc" in "disc jockey" referred to gramophone records, but now "DJ" is used as an all-encompassing term to describe someone who mixes recorded music from any sources, including cassettes, CDs, or digital audio files on a CDJ or laptop. One of the best young up and coming DJs in the on the West Coast is Bro. Jordan Dacres ska DJ Just Jordan 1/7 of the famed Fantasy League DJs.
"My dad is a prominent and well respected DJ on the radio in Jamaica so I always grew up with music in the household so as my mom puts it, 'it was only a matter of time' before I would follow in his footsteps. I played instruments throughout grade school (Sax, Drums, guitar, etc.) and when I got to college, wanted to go a different route. Going to parties with friends, I got tired of hearing so-so DJs and thought I could do a better job, so I put my money where my mouth was and invested in learning the craft".
Music, there is nothing quite like it. The feeling it gives you is unforgettable, and to have the opportunity and responsibility to connect with a crowd and take people on a journey that they’ve never been on before… it's simply intoxicating.
I have accomplished a lot just by having a strong network and practicing. I would share my early mixes with my friends and roommates, and when the word got out that I was DJing, I had a few friends ask me to play their house parties. When those parties blew up, it kind of snowballed into bigger things like university events at local college clubs and bar gigs. It was literally me playing out somewhere, someone else would hear me and offer me an opportunity to play somewhere else until I was popping up all over the city. Next thing you know, I’m getting my shot at playing in some of the best nightclubs in the Pacific Northwest and building a brand for myself.
Eventually, I would like to be respected as at least one of the best DJs on the westcoast and would love the opportunity to be a traveling DJ and book gigs around the country and internationally. I’ve seen a lot of guys with great hustle make a name for themselves in Seattle and run with it to the point where an opportunity presents itself to DJ full time; it would be a dream to do what I love every day and be compensated for it at that kind of level.
Three For The Founders...
Why Sigma?
"Because it’s the greatest of all Fraternities! But mostly because all of the Sigma men I’ve encountered before becoming a member have been strong leaders by example and are consistent pillars of support in their respected communities; of all the orgs I encountered, they were the ones consistently out doing the work that needed to be done at all levels and I wanted to be a part of it".
Is therea a Stigma of becoming a member of a fraternity though an alumni chapter?
"There’s definitely a stigma about becoming Greek through an alumni chapter because there’s a knock on how thorough the alumni process is; it’s even truer if you’re not that much removed from your undergrad years. But what I learned from the whole experience is that the process of becoming Greek only accounts for 1% of your greekdom; 99% is about what you are doing to push your org forward after becoming a member and that especially holds true for Sigma. I’ve met other brothers who came through alumni and have done a lot for the fraternity and thusly are respected for it. Also, the brothers I’ve met regionally after crossing have never treated me differently because I came through an alumni chapter; there’s a level of respect that we all bring something to the table and I have been welcomed with open arms. The most important thing is not forgetting why you joined your organization in the first place and letting others opinions deter what you want to accomplish".
What would you like your Sigma epitaph to read?
"Always willing to lend a hand, a shoulder, or a foot where ever needed".
